Safety Awareness

It’s AOTA’s Older Driver Safety Awareness Week!

This week, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) is promoting the important roles mobility and transportation play in ensuring that older adults remain active participants in the community. And one’s ability to drive is often a huge component! Fortunately, Occupational therapists have the skills necessary for evaluating one’s ability to safely operate a vehicle, and can create an individualized and unique rehabilitation program to aid these adults in remaining active, healthy and safe within their communities.

In honor of their mission, they are discussing a new theme every day this week (December 2nd  – December 7th, 2013) with the goal of empowering older drivers, their families and occupational therapists to advocate for safe travel options for people of all ages.

The following is a list of topics to be discussed, and to learn more click here:

Monday: Identifying Changes That Can Effect Driving

Tuesday: Family Conversations

Wednesday: Screening and Evaluations With an Occupational Therapist

Thursday: Equipment That Can Empower Drivers

Friday: Taking Changes in Stride
